Why Ebbw Vale homeowners are switching to renewables
Ebbw Vale is the classic South Wales industrial town in full reinvention. For a century it was dominated by one of the largest steelworks in Europe; the closure of the works in 2002 and the subsequent demolition was a defining moment for the upper valleys. What's followed has been one of the UK's largest post-industrial regeneration programmes: The Works site now hosts a college, a hospital, housing, and a leisure centre built on reclaimed industrial land. Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council's Corporate Plan centres on well-being, low-carbon regeneration, and tackling the structural inequality that industrial decline left behind. ECO4, Nest, and Welsh Government retrofit funding is more active in the NP23 postcode than almost anywhere else in Wales. The housing stock is predominantly valleys terraces and 20th-century council-built estates, with real need and real opportunity for renewables retrofit. Residents here tend to be direct, practical, and rightly suspicious of fast-talking salespeople; we work on trust, clear numbers, and being the local team that turns up when promised.
Solar PV in Ebbw Vale
Ebbw Vale's altitude (roughly 340m, the highest major town in our coverage area) gives it the coolest panel operating temperatures of any Welsh town we work in, which slightly offsets the shorter sunshine hours. Typical NP23 4kW systems deliver 3,400 to 3,700 kWh a year. Valleys terraces often have complex roof geometry — we use optimiser or microinverter designs as standard for Ebbw Vale installs. The Welsh Government's Warm Homes ECO Flex and Nest programmes are unusually active in NP23, and we run many installs as part of wholly-funded or partially-funded retrofit packages.

Battery storage in Ebbw Vale
Ebbw Vale's higher-altitude grid is unusually resilient — the newer feeder lines along the reclaimed Works corridor are among the best in Wales — but the economics of battery storage are what sell here. ECO4-funded battery plus solar plus insulation packages have transformed household energy costs for many NP23 residents, and we've installed dozens of 10kWh SigEnergy systems as part of these bundles. Time-of-use tariffs work well against the valleys' sharp 5 to 7pm import peak.

EV chargers in Ebbw Vale
Ebbw Vale's A465 Heads of the Valleys road puts it on a strong commuter corridor to Merthyr, Abergavenny, and beyond. Newer housing estates around the Works and at Rassau have driveways and take a straightforward EV-charger install. Older valleys terraces need honest advice — we won't install a home charger where there's no safe parking option. Where installation is viable, we use Zappi, Ohme, and Easee units, and the Welsh Government's EV grant top-ups for valleys postcodes are a welcome boost.
